We have a new ranch member! Please welcome Lillie, our new livestock guard dog.
Lillie is an Akbash, three year old, beautifully trained, guard dog. She came to us from another multi-species grazing farm north of Dallas, who have similar practices as Senter Ranch, and we're so happy to have her.
The Akbash breed is native to western Turkey with a smooth-short to medium-full white coat, with long legs, a tail that curls and is frequently feathered. They have loose skin around their necks to help protect them from predators during fights. They tend to be calm and aware, not shy nor aggressive. They do not chase or round up livestock. When protecting their flock, they have tremendous power, focus, endurance and perseverance. Their great speed, loose neck skin, flexible bodies and bounding athleticism give them the physical edge they need to excel as a livestock protection dog.
Lillie and our gelding, Big 'Un, are still unsure of each other, and continually testing each others boundaries. African Cowboy has had to adjust our bedroom noise level with the use of a fan to drown out the nighttime barking. The dirt mounds are slowly disappearing and becoming holes as Lillie protects our land from the moles. We have witnessed Lillie bark at the bushes on the fence line in the early morning hours only to see a coyote run off a few minutes later. Whenever I check on the livestock, Lillie accompanies me in the evaluation and makes her own assessment for safety. Every time I return to the ranch, Lillie is there to report to me and welcome me home!
We think its safe to say, Lillie is a vital member of the ranch family!
